Altarum to Present at the 2024 Association of SNAP Nutrition Education Administrators (ASNNA) Annual Conference

Many SNAP-Ed programs experience challenges effectively and meaningfully reaching racially and ethnically diverse communities. These communities often experience barriers to healthy eating and have increased risk for food insecurity and lower consumption of fruits and vegetables. SNAP-Ed programming has the potential to address barriers and improve inequities by equipping participants with skills to more effectively manage food resources and knowledge to improve dietary behaviors.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, Illinois Extension, and Altarum partnered to highlight the efforts of two SNAP-Ed programs working to reach more effectively Black or African American and Latino or Hispanic audiences with culturally responsive SNAP-Ed programming. Presenters will discuss the need for culturally responsive programming in their state, formative evaluation approaches and findings, and strategies for improving reach of Black or African American and Hispanic or Latino audiences. The discussion will also touch upon the importance of a robust assessment that includes community voices to build cultural relevance.

The Association of SNAP Nutrition Education Administrators (ASNNA) is a professional organization for SNAP Nutrition Education (SNAP-Ed) administrators committed to improving the nutritional status of SNAP recipients. By implementing and spreading integrated approaches to nutrition education, ASNNA aims to serve the nation as an excellent resource for obesity prevention, network expertise, partnership development, and policy advocacy. The purpose of the 2024 ASNNA Conference is to bring together SNAP-Ed practitioners and stakeholders to identify frameworks and strategies to reconnect SNAP-Ed programming and implementation to local, statewide, and national needs and audiences; to rebuild the foundation of SNAP-Ed programming, partnerships, and implementation to be inclusive and emphasize equity; and to reimagine SNAP-Ed programming and implementation as it relates to federal policy, guidelines, and reports.
