Tom Hill is the former project director for the technical assistance project for the Access to Recovery (ATR) initiative at the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). To this effort, he brought a firm commitment to the goal of long-term recovery for individuals, families, and communities through this systems-change initiative that underscores client-choice, a comprehensive menu of stage-appropriate services, and the collaborative engagement of state and tribal systems with grassroots community networks.
Mr. Hill previously served as the deputy project director for the Recovery Community Services Program (RCSP), another initiative of CSAT, which builds capacity with community-based organizations to provide peer recovery support services. As a writer and designer, he has contributed to a variety of documents, products, and learning tools, pertinent to both the RCSP and ATR projects, as well as assisting in program design, development, and implementation.
Mr. Hill is frequently sought out as a national thought leader in the recovery field and his personal experience of recovery spans two decades. A skilled community organizer, he has worked both professionally and as a grassroots leader in areas such as recovery and addiction, HIV/AIDS, reproductive rights, and LGBT health on the full-life continuum. In addition, he has extensive experience as a trainer /educator/facilitator in the following areas: cultural competency, LGBT health, addiction and recovery, mental health, community organizing, community assessments, organizational/program/leadership development.
Mr. Hill has served as faculty at many learning institutions, including the Servant Leadership School in Washington, D.C. and several state- and regionally-sponsored summer schools for addiction professionals in the Pacific Northwest, Nevada, the District of Columbia, and New England. In addition, he has presented workshops and keynote speeches at numerous conferences and summits nationwide.
Mr. Hill has served on numerous committees and boards, including the ATTC National Advisory Council, CSAT’s Partnership for Recovery Steering Committee, and the Annapolis Coalition Steering Committee. He is a founding board member of Faces and Voices of Recovery (FAVOR), a national grassroots advocacy organization. Mr. Hill was a Robert Wood Johnson fellow in the Developing Leadership in Reducing Substance Abuse initiative from 2003-2006 and is a recipient of the Johnson Institute’s 2006 America Honors Recovery Award.
