Mr. Armijo has served in positions of increasing responsibility since joining the Institute as a Policy Analyst in 1999. He has led efforts with numerous federal and state agencies to manage technology portfolios; inform national health IT policy; and foster advancements to improve health though accelerating the adoption of electronic health records.
With more than 15 years of experience, Mr. Armijo has dedicated his career to paradigm-changing work in the application of information technology to health and health care. He began that career by designing one of the first anonymous, error/near-miss patient safety systems to be widely used in the health sector. Today, his contributions center on realizing the value of system wide changes in practice enabled by technology.
His projects have included work with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology; Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality; Military Health System; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; American Health Information Community; State Departments of Health in Michigan, Connecticut and Florida; Health Resources and Services Administration; and the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, which is the principal policy advisor to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
Mr. Armijo currently serves as the Director of the Michigan Center for Effective IT Adoption which supports the selection, adoption and meaningful use of electronic health records to improve the quality and efficiency of primary care services delivered in Michigan. His research interests include understanding of the true costs and benefits of technology investments; effectively managing benefit realization; fostering the creation of a ‘learning health system’; and effecting behavior change through improved information flows.
Before joining Altarum, Mr. Armijo held administrative positions at one of the largest health systems in the country and at a health maintenance organization affiliated with the University of Michigan.
Mr. Armijo earned his master of health services administration degree from the University of Michigan and his B.A. from Oakland University.
