Health care providers and systems are often unprepared to address issues related to delivering high-quality health care services to diverse populations. Differences in language, age, race and ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, political and religious beliefs, sexual orientation, and life experience can all influence a person’s perception of or access to the health care system and the services available to them. Addressing cultural competency addresses disparities in health and health outcomes.
Cultural competency is at the core of Altarum Institute’s work, from the conceptualization of a project through the evaluation of outcomes and dissemination of findings. By defining cultural competency broadly, understanding that it is an ongoing process, and viewing each encounter as a cross-cultural opportunity, Altarum is able to work effectively with policymakers, program administrators, front-line staff members, and clients to understand barriers and highlight effective strategies. Altarum’s proven record of assistance with cultural competency includes culturally and linguistically appropriate training, technical assistance, and health education with and about diverse populations. We have many years of experience with assessing and then building the ability of individuals and organizations to provide culturally and linguistically competent care, developing strategic plans to implement culturally competent strategies, and designing culturally appropriate materials and curricula.
