Altarum is currently conducting two USDA Food and Nutrition Service-funded evaluations of seven models of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) nutrition education to determine the extent to which SNAP education interventions can be linked to increasing healthy eating behaviors. Taking place in Iowa, Kentucky, New York, Michigan, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania, the studies consist of a process evaluation focused on how the projects are being implemented, challenges faced by demonstration projects as they move forward, costs of implementing demonstration projects, and an evaluation of the project’s own evaluation efforts. We are also conducting an outcome evaluation focused on client behavior change and are providing the demonstration projects with guidance to meet the evaluation requirements for this study, including numbers of clients needed in intervention and control groups to meet FNS statistical requirements and to measure behavior change. Data collection includes onsite client interviews at intervention sites, telephone surveys, and follow-up calls to nonrespondents. Altarum is also responsible for coordination of project activities with demonstration project officials, collecting process evaluation data, conducting site visits, and managing contracts and budgets.
