As part of its nationwide sexually transmitted disease awareness and prevention campaign, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called on Altarum subsidiary Palladian Partners to produce low-literacy English- and Spanish-language brochures for young adults, millions of whom contract an STD every year. After designing, writing, and editing brochures on eight STDs in English, Palladian’s translation team created Spanish-language versions of the text, back-translating to ensure factual accuracy. Knowing that effective translations are sensitive to culture as well as language, Palladian field-tested the brochures in key audiences. Through its STD hotline, CDC distributes these multi-award-winning products, which have proved particularly popular among state health departments and local health clinics.
