Altarum Institute Project Director Testifies on Veterans Issues Before Congressional Subcommittee

May 19, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC – The Co-Director of the Altarum Institute Veterans Community Action Teams Mission Project (“VCAT”), John King, testified before the House of Representatives Veterans’ Affairs Health Subcommittee today. King’s testimony provided the Committee with information regarding the VCAT project and the model Altarum hopes to develop to better integrate community services for veterans.

Altarum’s Veterans Community Action Teams Mission Project was started specifically to strengthen the web of care that currently exists for veterans and their families. The VCAT project will develop a collaborative, community-based model to integrate the outreach and delivery of services from public, private, and nonprofit organizations to veterans and their family members.

“This was a tremendous opportunity for Altarum to share with Congress some of the groundbreaking work our team is doing to help our nation’s veterans community,” said Altarum Institute President and CEO Lincoln Smith. “Since 2002, more than 870,000 service members have separated from the active military and reserves and transitioned to civilian life. Through our Mission Project, we hope to learn better ways to serve those who have done so much to serve their nation.

The Altarum Institute Mission Projects Initiative was begun in 2008. The Mission Projects Initiative is committing more than $8 million of internal Institute funds to three critical areas of societal need. The purpose of the Initiative is to solve pressing health care issues using systems methods at the institutional, organizational, and community levels in partnership with the public and private sectors with the goal of improving the quality of life for millions of Americans.

A copy of the testimony is available online.
