Prominent Advocate on HIV/AIDS Issues Joins Altarum Institute

April 25, 2008

Washington, DC (April 25, 2008) – Jesse Milan, Jr., prominent leader and advocate on HIV/AIDS issues, has joined the nonprofit Altarum Institute as Vice President and Director of its Community Health Systems Group.

“When we began the search for someone to lead our Community Health Systems Group, I hoped to find an individual with expertise in health issues, a network of contacts in the health community, and experience leading research and consulting efforts,” said Lincoln Smith, President and CEO of Altarum. “With Jesse, we’ve found all three.”

A person living with HIV for 26 years, Milan has spoken and written extensively on HIV/AIDS issues. From 2002-2007, he served as co-chair of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Advisory Committee on HIV and STD Prevention and Treatments. He recently co-authored an article on a national HIV prevention plan.

Milan received the “Hero in the Struggle” award in 2008 from the Black AIDS Institute. He was honored by HRSA in 2004 for “leading the national and international fight against HIV disease.” Milan is past director of the City of Philadelphia AIDS Office, and served as president of the boards of Action AIDS; the Philadelphia AIDS Consortium; and the National Episcopal AIDS Coalition. He is currently board chair of the Black AIDS Institute.

Prior to joining Altarum, Milan was Senior Principal for Health Policy and Promotion at SRA Constella Group, where he also served as Vice President for Global Health Convergence and Vice President for Health Communications. Milan served for six years as Constella’s Project Director for the CDC’s National Prevention Information Network, the world’s largest service for information on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and tuberculosis.

Milan is former Chief of Staff to the President of Temple University; was a Deputy City Solicitor for the City of Philadelphia; and an associate attorney at the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. A native of Kansas, Milan is a graduate of Princeton University and the New York University School of Law.

“I am thrilled to join an organization that shares my passion for improving the health of our communities,” said Milan.
